Exploring the legend of Lawrence of Arabia - Seven Pillars of Wisdom – Wadi Rum – Jordan

2005-10-18
During my tour in Jordan in July this year (2005), I talked to several Bedouins about Lawrence of Arabia, his lifestyle, preparation and attack on Aqaba. Who was he really? Is the movie about him telling the truth? His full name was Thomas Edward Lawrence, who lived from 1888 to 1935. He wrote the self biography Seven Pillars, but what think the Bedouins about him?

Before filming the moviemakers built a big fortifications in the middle of the desert Wadi Rum. It's full of small and big room with a great number of tunnels and holes. It's like a labyrinth where you easily can get lost.

So what is this fortification doing in the movie its for me a mystery. It would be more romantic to tell the story as it really was. For the first; Lawrence of Arabia didn't live in this fortification.

As mentioned, it was just constructed for the movie. For the second: he had probably his own intention for helping the Arabians. In addition he also did it for strategic military purposes behalf of British interests.

The story in the film is not so bright as it is told.

In the desert of Dana and Wadi Rum the Bedouin people still live as they have been doing for centuries. They still wander through the desert looking for the best places to herd their sheep and goats, carrying their black tents with them wherever they go.

T. E. Lawrence became famous after the First World War because of the remarkable role he had played while serving as a British liaison officer during the Arab Revolt of 1916 -18.

Coming up more information and video clip from a recent movie about him.
