Candomblé is a major part of the New Years celebration in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil!

2006-02-22
Candomblé is a religion which came from Africa to Brazil. On the New Year`s Day in Rio, religious rituals are performed by the Candomblé cult. Candomblé is an Afro-American religion practiced mainly in Brazil, but also in adjacent countries. It was carried by African priests and adherents who were brought as slaves between 1549 and 1888. Now it has become popular when Brazilians celebrate the New Year!

Each year many hundred thousands people celebrate the New Year on this beach. It`s one of the most colourful and spectactular parties and shows in the world.

The name Batuque is also used on the religion, especially before the 19th century when Candomblé became more common. Both words are believed to derive from a Bantu-family language.

In recent surveys, about 2 million Brazilians (1.5% of the total population) have declared candomblé as their religion. However, in Brazilian culture, religions are not seen as mutually exclusive, and thus many people of other faiths participate in candomblé rituals regularly or occasionally.

Candomblé deities, rituals, and holidays are now an integral part of Brazilian folklore. It could be experience on the New Years Day, especially on Copacapana beach in Rio.
